RUSSIA'S MARS SPACE PROBE CRASHES INTO PACIFIC OCEAN.(MAIN)

SYDNEY, Australia -- Russia's new space probe to Mars failed shortly after blastoff and came crashing back today into the Pacific Ocean, eliminating a remote danger of nuclear contamination.

Pieces of the probe crashed into the Pacific Ocean about 1,000 miles southeast of Easter Island, and 2,000 miles northwest of Santiago, Chile, said Alan Hodges, director general of the federal disaster coordination agency Emergency Management Australia. The crash occurred at 8:34 p.m. EST on Sunday, he said.
