MCCALL BACKERS TURN OUT TO FILL COFFERS.(CAPITAL REGION)

ALBANY -- More than 3,000 people attended house parties held across the state Monday night to support Democratic State Comptroller H. Carl McCall in his gubernatorial bid, his campaign reported Tuesday.

McCall campaign coordinator Richard Fife said the parties were well attended despite the snow that hampered travel in some parts of the state. But he could not say Tuesday how much money was raised from the events.

The parties were held as the comptroller and his Democratic rival for the party nomination, former U.S. Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo, engage in a flat-out fund-raising sprint before the next financial filing is due with the state Board of Elections on Jan. 15 that has taken both of them across the state and to cities nationwide.

McCall addressed party attendants over the phone from a bash held in Manhattan at the home of Sarah Kovner, who was a special assistant to former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala, and her husband, Victor, who served as New York City's corporation counsel under former Mayor David Dinkins. -- Elizabeth Benjamin
